This single-family house — designed by Rick Wiebe — will be built on a grade-beam and piles to accommodate a small lot and close neighbors. The living area on the second floor is extended by way of a balcony onto a roof-deck above the car-port. The second-floor patio will also have a small shelter which will double as a summer kitchen. The main floor will have a vaulted ceiling at the front with the master bedroom and en suite at the back end of the house. I always imagined this house would be built in a North-South orientation with the back facing South. The shape is simple and easy to build, but the small footprint and lack of basement posed design challenges that required careful planning. For example, the mechanical room is in a hidden center room concealed by an array of closet doors that open to the front coat storage — the last closet door provides access to the utility room.

Looking forward to building this one.

….coming soon! Here is a design we are working on with Syversen Monteyne Architecture. The challenges associated with infill have mostly to do with lot size: these condos are intended for a small lot – similar to ones you will find in areas like Ft Rouge, Crescentwood, or River Heights. The building envelope is designed to perform with maximum efficiency, with each owner having complete control over their own air exchange and climate control.

On this project we had the good fortune of working with Bob Kehler of Bob’s Woodworking — Manitoba and NW Ontario’s premier timber-framer. The T&G roof decking along with the timbers will all be visible from the underside of the ceiling. Debroc Masonry is using bricks reclaimed from the fence to clad the lower portion of the exterior. The intent is to make this addition blend into the historic house which has a rich history in Winnipeg.
